The tiny retinol sample lasted me a few months on its own. I cannot stress this enough - be careful with this brand. I don't have sensitive skin at all and I still peeled quite a lot. I've had a group of stubborn dark spots around my mouth for almost a year - no concoction of Vit C, azaleic acid, mandelic acid, lactic acid, kojic acid, tranexamic acid, etc. Full disclosure - you DO peel! The product literally tells you to expect that, and it's a common result of new retinol usage. I find that it happens mostly when I've neglected to adequately moisturize - and when I do add moisture back into my skin, you can barely see the peeling anymore.
Underneath the peeling though, my spots have significantly lightened, and I've only been using for about 2 weeks! Make sure to use with lots of SPF, and I hope it works for you as well as it did for me! Seriously this is the best stuff ever. Stayed consistent for over a month. Switched from all over my face to spot treatment when I was having a really bad breakout and picking at it. It made the area super dry but then the dryness flaked away gradually to no dark spot at all! Also works for when you want your spot to go down faster.
I consider retinol use to be a marathon not a sprint so I'm ok with using something reasonably priced with hopes that it will help my skin in the long term.
That said, this product will make your skin peel and flake for days after usage. I agree with the other reviewer who said this smells like burnt rubber when you apply. Before you buy, read the ingredients. This is essentially a niacinamide and jojoba oil serum mixed with a retinol ester. I think there are better formulas on the market in the same price range. This product is great and has great value. I use it as a spot treatment or on the problem areas of my face.
You have to moisturize and use SPF with this product but that is normal for retinol, azelaic acid, etc. I definitely wouldn't say the drying effect is too bad at all though I have normal combo skin that isn't especially sensitive.
It has also lasted way longer than I expected it to. I was excited about getting rid of dark spots on my face. I used this exactly as it says every other day. It made my face burn and have big red welps. Nothing I could do could make it stop and it also made my whole face peel. I do not have sensitive skin but this made it terrible. Great product to try if you want to help out your acne scars.
