What happens if muslims drink alcohol

Good article. A lot of items have been stretched to get into the Halal category due to the size of the burgeoning market. The rule is: No blood, no alcohol and no meat or meat derived stuff like stock or gelatine unless it was slaughtered in Halal fashion. Game and Kosher meat are ok. Milk, cheese, fish and eggs are fine too. Unusual food items might be ok for consumption or not depending of the school of jurisprudence.

However, many would object to someone drinking alcohol at their table, be in the same room or refuse to eat in an establishment that serves alcohol at all. I find it silly though. These tips are all good to know for what people should think about when they host Muslims. Religious Jews typically will not eat food in a non-Kosher home or the home of someone who is not observing the Sabbath.

How do Muslims decide if they should eat with others or at anothers home? Is there Halal certification for restaurants or rule of thumb rules?

Muslims are not so strict about this kind of thing or about the handling of cutlery like some of my Jewish friends do. There are indeed Halal certifications for restaurants all over the world especially in the US and in Canada but even in the UK and France that I know of.

But restaurants that serve halal meat always have a certificate that authenticates the meat as being halal. I have in fact encouraged several non-Muslim friends to try the local halal butcher because the meat is very good and fresh and they have and are very happy with it…so really we are not so rigid and conservative about every little detail.

Drinking alcohol leads many people to do things that they regret afterward. Drinking can also lead to loss of self-esteem, dignity and terrible arguments. Not drinking helps people to avoid these sins. Drinking alcohol and other intoxicants cause hundreds and thousands of people die every year from illnesses brought about by alcohol and drug abuse. Drinking Alcohol drives people to do acts that they would never consider otherwise. It is not permissible for Muslims to drink alcohol even in small quantities.

The reason behind this prohibition relates mainly to the intoxicating effect of alcohol on the faculty of reason in human beings. The mind is of utmost importance because it is the recipient of the divine message and legal rulings. In other words, the accountability of human beings is solely determined by their mental capacity. People are not held accountable for anything when they are asleep or under the effect of anesthesia for surgical procedures.

The prohibition of alcohol in the Quran was gradual mainly because drinking was a deeply rooted practice in pre-Islamic Arabia. The majority of scholars are of the view that it is eighty lashes for a free man and forty for others. They quoted as evidence the hadeeth of Anas quoted above, in which it says that a man who had drunk wine was brought to the Prophet peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him , and he had him flogged forty times with two palm branches that had been stripped of their leaves.

Abu Bakr also did likewise during his caliphate. The Council of Senior Scholars is agreed that the punishment for one who drinks wine is the hadd punishment, which is eighty lashes. Some of the scholars — such as Ibn Quddamah may Allaah have mercy on him and Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] in al-Ikhtiyaaraat — think that giving more than forty lashes is left to the discretion of the Muslim leader.

And Allaah knows best. If he neglects any of his prayers or fasts, then he is committing a major sin which is worse than the sin of drinking alcohol. If he drinks wine during the day in Ramadaan then he is committing two major sins: the first is breaking the fast during the day in Ramadaan and the second is drinking alcohol.

He should note that if a Muslim falls into sin and is unable to repent because his faith is weak that does not justify him persisting in sin or failing to do acts of worship and being negligent concerning them. Rather he should do whatever he can of acts of worship and strive to give up the major sins that he is committing.
